Seton’s dance programme holds sway

Seton Catholic College has once again demonstrated its position at the forefront of dance education in Australia, showcasing the strength of its nationally accredited dance program through its outstanding Year 12 Dance Showcase.

Performed to sold-out audiences, the showcase celebrated not only the talent and dedication of students, but also the success of Seton’s innovative Certificate II and Certificate IV Dance pathways.

The Year 12 Dance Showcase is a night where Seton’s Certificate IV Dance students present the work they have developed alongside their Year 9–11 dance troupes. As part of the process, students choreograph original routines, lead rehearsals, and problem-solve creative and logistical challenges to produce stage-ready performances. The showcase highlights not only their technical and artistic abilities, but also their leadership, collaboration and project management skills.

The Showcase forefronted the extraordinary calibre of Seton’s dance students and the vibrant culture of the College’s Performing Arts program. Alongside the sold-out evening performance, students also presented a special fundraising ‘open rehearsal’ performance in support of Seton’s Alternative to Leavers Program. The event raised $2,500 to support students participating in the upcoming Alternative to Leavers Thailand Service Tour, where students will engage in service learning with Myanmar students seeking refuge in Thailand.

Students are already seeing the impact of the Cert IV program on their confidence, aspirations and sense of belonging within the College community. Year 11 student Amberlilly described the program as a place of inclusivity and encouragement:

“Being part of the Cert IV program means community, inclusivity and gratitude. Although I don’t dance outside of school, the program is fun and welcoming, allowing me to showcase my abilities without judgment. I’m grateful to be part of this special opportunity.”

For fellow Year 11 student Bella, the program is helping shape future career opportunities in the Performing Arts industry:

“The Cert IV Dance program prepares me for future training and job opportunities in the Performing Arts. When I graduate, I’ll be better qualified to choreograph or perform professionally.”

Led by passionate teachers Miss Howieson and Miss Anderson, the dance program is designed to nurture both artistic excellence and personal growth.

“Offering Certificate IV at a high school level builds real-world skills in a supportive environment. It nurtures passion while preparing students for future careers — whether in the arts or beyond. Skills like teamwork, time management and creativity are invaluable no matter where life takes them,” Miss Howieson said.

At Seton Catholic College, students are encouraged to pursue their passions while developing the confidence and skills needed for life beyond school. Through innovative programs, dedicated staff and authentic learning opportunities, the College continues to foster a thriving community where creativity, talent and purpose flourish – both on stage and beyond.

In partnership with Empower Dance (RTO 40397), Seton is one of only a handful of schools nationwide delivering the higher-level Certificate IV in Dance qualification to Years 11 and 12 students. The qualification provides students with industry-recognised skills, strengthens university pathways, and opens opportunities for careers within and beyond the performing arts.

This year, 18 Year 11 students are enrolled in Certificate IV Dance, while 35 Year 10 students are completing Certificate II Dance. Together, these programs are equipping students with practical, transferable skills in creativity, collaboration, discipline and performance.
