Chisholm student WA’s only representative at Aerial Arts World Championships

Chisholm Catholic College student, Natalia, has become the sole West Aussie selected in the inaugural Australian team competing at the International Aerial Arts World Championships.

The Year 9 will join other athletes from across the nation following a standout year in competition. She claimed the national title in three sections at the Bend the Air Championships on the Sunshine Coast in January, an achievement that earned her place on the team.

Speaking about what drew her to aerial arts, Natalia said:

“I had always been inspired by watching aerial artists on social media, so I was excited to discover that my dance school, The Performance Company (TPC), also offered aerial silks classes. After about a year of training, my coach encouraged me to audition for the aerial competition Bend the Air.

“Around the same time, I also began learning lyra through Kinetica Circus. My background in dance and performance at TPC gave me a strong foundation and helped me transition confidently into aerial arts.”

In terms of influences, Natalie feels lucky to be surrounded by so many supportive mentors:

“My parents have always believed in me and have given me every opportunity to develop my skills. I’m so grateful for their constant support. My coach, Madeleine, and The Performance Company owner, Raquel, have been with me since the beginning of my aerial journey. Their guidance and encouragement have helped me achieve everything I have so far. I’m also very thankful to my other teachers at TPC and Kinetica Circus, who have all contributed in some way or another to my achievements.”

“I’m excited to represent both Western Australia and Australia on the world stage.”

International Aerial Arts is a sport and performing art of aerial acrobatics, where athletes and performers execute strength, flexibility, and artistic routines while suspended above the ground using specialised apparatus.

The discipline includes

  • Aerial Silks
  • Aerial Hoop (Lyra)
  • Aerial Hammock
  • Aerial Straps
  • Rope (Corde Lisse)

Natalia trains at least five days a week, balancing intensive dance classes with around eight hours of aerial training.

As she looks towards the World Championships, Natalia’s biggest goal is to become the best version of herself:

“Of course, it would be amazing to achieve a great result, but for me it’s about performing to the best of my ability, making Australia proud, and supporting my teammates along the way. I also want to enjoy every moment of the experience, have fun, meet people from around the world who share the same passion for aerial arts, and create memories that I’ll never forget.”

The International Aerial Arts World Championships will take place in Aruba in August.
