Charlie’s story brings Kimberley history to life at Holy Rosary

Students at Holy Rosary School in Derby had a special opportunity to connect with local Kimberley history as part of the school’s Indigenous Literacy Day celebrations.

Students from Years 2 to 6 welcomed author Edith Wright, who shared her book Charlie’s Swim, the remarkable true story of her uncle, Charlie D’Antoine, and his bravery during the Japanese air raid on Broome on 3 March 1942.

Born in Broome and of Bardi descent, Edith grew up in Derby and has a special connection to Holy Rosary, having begun her teaching career at the school after graduating in 1986.

Former Aboriginal Teaching Assistant Kylie Morrison, a member of Charlie’s family, joined Edith to read the story to students and share the family’s connection to this important chapter of Kimberley history.

“It was great to hear my Nanna Kylie share the story with us of my Great Uncle Charlie,” said Year 3 student Evangeline.

Teacher Miss Lesley said the visit provided students with a powerful connection between the history they learn about and the people and places around them. “What a special opportunity to share with the school a real-life connection to part of Kimberley history through Charlie’s story. Students can now connect what they have seen at Town Beach in Broome with the story of a real hero,” she said.

For Edith, the visit was also a special homecoming. “It was lovely to come back to Derby, where I grew up and began my teaching career, to share the story of my Uncle Charlie with the Holy Rosary students,” she said.

The visit was held on 2 September as part of Holy Rosary School’s Indigenous Literacy Day activities.
