CEWA’s Virtual School Network (ViSN) is an innovative initiative aimed at providing high-quality online education to Year 11 and Year 12 students. Established in 2018, ViSN was created to support smaller regional schools in offering courses and to continue education for families in remote areas.
Since then, ViSN has grown to become a vital part of our Catholic education system. In 2026, 410 students are accessing 28 courses through ViSN.
The ViSN program is designed to help students build their technology, communication and critical thinking skills, work independently, and expand their network within the CEWA system.
“I’ve absolutely loved my ViSN course this year. Studying online has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I get to work at my own pace and the flexibility is a huge advantage, if I don’t finish an activity, I can decide whether to complete it at home or fit it into the next day’s lesson,” said Lucie, Year 11.
“I chose ViSN because the subject I wanted to study wasn’t available at my school due to low interest. I’m so grateful ViSN was an option, because now I get to study a subject I genuinely love, alongside other students who want to be there too,” she added.
“ViSN has made a huge difference in my ATAR journey. With Psychology not being offered at my school, ViSN allowed me to still do the course, with it being my best performing subject. From the camp experience, to the weekly Teams calls, I’ve made many new friends from all over WA. ViSN has given me the opportunity to follow my passion, and to also be part of a supportive community,” added Lauren, also Year 11.
Health Studies Teacher, Lauren Byett said teaching online had reframed her understanding of a classroom:
“It has encouraged me to plan with deeper intention, create space for collaboration and inclusion, and communicate concepts with greater simplicity and clarity.”
“I’m so grateful ViSN was an option, because now I get to study a subject I genuinely love.”
Aranmore Catholic College ViSN Mentor, and Year 11 Modern History Teacher, Lesley O’Connor said ViSN was a rewarding experience which allowed her to connect with students, foster meaningful learning, and support their success in an online environment:
“Teaching through ViSN has expanded my skills in online education, making me a more adaptable, innovative, and student-focused teacher.”
For Holy Cross College Year 12 EAL/D teacher, Mirta Aguirre ViSN has demonstrated that great teaching isn’t defined by a classroom but by opportunities created for students:
“Online teaching has challenged me in many ways, but each challenge I have overcome has strengthened my practice and created more opportunities for multilingual learners to develop the academic English they need to succeed. It has encouraged me to move beyond traditional approaches, embrace innovation, and reaffirm my belief that when we remove barriers to learning, we open doors to achievement, confidence, and future possibilities for every learner.”
The ViSN model has been intentionally designed to reflect best practice for K-12 online learning,
