Iona students shine on national stage with award-winning documentary

A documentary created by Iona Presentation College’s Year 11 Media ATAR students has received local and national recognition.

‘Ben Rocks’ follows the all-abilities AFL team at the University Football Club and its charismatic captain, Ben “Rocky” Rock, sharing a powerful story of determination, belonging and the importance of creating opportunities for everyone.

The documentary was awarded Best Australian School Documentary at the International Focus on Ability Film Festival in Sydney before winning the People’s Choice Student Film Award and Best Secondary Student Documentary at Fremantle’s Rock the Boat Film Festival.

Year 11 student, Olive, reflected on the experience and the opportunity to learn from other young filmmakers saying:

‘Being recognised for a film that my classmates and I have worked extremely hard on is very rewarding, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go.

‘I learnt so much from viewing the other winning films, including the important messages they shared and the creative ways they were portrayed’.

The College’s Media teacher, Brigette Downes said the awards were a testament to the students’ commitment to telling meaningful stories.

‘Through Ben’s story, I hope they’ve come to understand the power of film to challenge perceptions, celebrate individuality and give a voice to stories that deserve to be told.’

The achievement reflects Iona’s commitment to providing authentic learning experiences that encourage students to think differently, act with compassion and use their talents to make a positive difference.

Through the College’s Media program, students develop valuable skills in filmmaking, journalism and digital storytelling while discovering how their voices can contribute to a more inclusive and understanding world.

The achievement is a wonderful example of Catholic education empowering young people to make a difference, together.
