Infant Jesus School puts Laudato Si “from hope to action” into practice

Infant Jesus School in Morley has been busy marking Laudato Si’ Week, putting the theme “from hope to action” into practice across the school. The week highlights how small, intentional steps can make a meaningful difference in caring for our common home.

Students have been actively involved in a range of sustainability initiatives. Earlier this term, the school worked closely with WasteSorted Schools to complete a whole-school waste audit, helping students understand what is being thrown away and how to reduce waste to landfill, supporting the Laudato Si’ Goals of Ecological Economics and Response to the Cry of the Earth. Students also participated in Clean Up Australia Day, taking pride in caring for their local environment.

Earth Day in April was celebrated through a recyclable craft lunchtime club, encouraging creative reuse and reducing waste, while each class was gifted a class plant, providing a hands-on way for students to nurture and care for living things and deepen their connection to creation.

Laudato Si’ Week activities are led by the Year 6 Sustainability Ministry students, who opened the week with a whole-school assembly. Initiatives include a waste-free lunchbox competition, which promotes Sustainable Lifestyles, and a whole-school clean-up event, encouraging shared responsibility for caring for our environment.

Year 6 Sustainability Ministry students Charlie and Shayla shared their reflections:

Charlie said:
“The sustainability ministry is one of the most important Ministries, taking care of our whole community and leading by example… Pope Francis encouraged us to take care of our common home.”

Shayla added:
“The ministry has helped me to see the world more and what we can do to help it, how what we do is connected to the whole world. It’s pretty cool that Pope Francis left us a letter to guide us, so people can take charge.”

Through these initiatives, Infant Jesus School continues to live out the call of Laudato Si’, empowering students to move from hope to action in caring for our common home.
