IMAGINeers raise over $1,000 for Kids’ Cancer

Year 5 and 6 students from St Mary’s Primary School in Kalgoorlie have raised over $1,000 for the Kids’ Cancer Project by taking part in the annual Write a Book in A Day Challenge.

The Challenge calls on students to write and illustrate a novel in 12 hours. Teams of five to ten students had to choose a day between 1 May and 30 September to write and illustrate an entire book.

The students, known as the IMAGINeers, had to include set characters, themes, and words in their book testing their ability to collaborate under strict time conditions.

Every submitted book is made available to kids in hospitals around Australia for free.

In the end the IMAGINeers were able to produce

two outstanding stories with the Year 5s submitting Lost in a Game, focusing on a boy creating a new game to show his friend which quickly turns playtime into survival as the pair face a series of daring challenges to escape.

The Year 6’s Wallace Whale: Out of Water, focused on two childhood friends, a pilot with a love for academics, and a pet groomer who dreams of being an artist, who find a beached whale and try to save him before time runs out.

Principal, Elizabeth Browner said:

“This challenge was a wonderful opportunity for our students to stretch their creativity and resilience while working for a cause greater than themselves.

“Their generosity and commitment to supporting children with cancer reflects the values we hold dear at St Mary’s.”
