Bunbury Catholic College student chosen for prestigious Olympiad

Bunbury Catholic College student, Mali has been chosen for the Prestigious International Earth Science Olympiad.

Mali loves Earth and Environmental Science and she is very good at the subject, so good in fact that her dedication and academic ability is taking the Year 12 Bunbury Catholic College student to the world’s pinnacle of Science competitions for students. After attending a prestigious invitation-only summer school in Canberra in January, Mali is on her way to Italy in August for the International Earth Science Olympiad.

Mali first outperformed hundreds of students in the 2025 Science Olympiad Exam to gain a place at the summer school — where the learning hours were long and the examinations exhaustive. Following this program, she was selected as one of only four students to represent Australia in the 2026 International Earth Science Olympiad.

She is the first Bunbury Catholic College student ever, and the first student from WA in at least a decade, to be chosen for the Australian team.

The 17-year-old student is down-to-earth about her success, saying the summer school was an incredible experience, exploring geology (her favourite area of Earth Science) along with climate modelling, astronomy, palaeobiology and more.

“The two-week Summer School course was highly intensive, with 8–10-hour days, field trips, and a final 5-hour exam. To be selected for the international team, I was judged on my academic ability and my ability to work efficiently with others,” Mali said.

“I consider myself extremely lucky to have been selected from the 24 other equally capable and intelligent students to attend the International Earth Science Olympiad and represent Australia.

“The Olympiad in Turin will be exciting and challenging. I will be collaborating with students from around the world — who may or may not speak English — during a field excursion, extensive exams and a final presentation for the judges.”

Bunbury Catholic College Principal, Ben Priest praised Mali’s achievement in securing a coveted place on the Australian Earth Science Olympiad team.

“Mali has many talents and her success in Science is a reflection of the way our College encourages students to pursue their own pathways and passions in education,” said Mr Priest.

“As well as being gifted academically and working hard to achieve excellent results, Mali is one of the lead actors in our College Production of ‘Mary Poppins — the Broadway Musical’ opening on February 26.

“Congratulations Mali, we know you will be a wonderful ambassador for Australia.”
