ViSN Camp: A Memorable Learning Experience

One-hundred and thirty Year 11 students from across WA came together for the Virtual School camp at the start of December.

Virtual Schools Network (ViSN) is a network of secondary schools who work together to deliver online courses to Year 11 and Year 12 students.

The primary goals of the camp were to familiarise students with online learning, foster collaboration, and create a supportive community.

During the camp, students participated in various collaborative sessions. These included “Getting to Know You” activities, designed to break the ice and build camaraderie among students and teachers.

As one student from St John Bosco College remarked:

‘Camp allowed me to feel comfortable learning online by meeting my teacher and other students learning online as well.’

In addition to icebreakers, students engaged in practical lessons aimed at developing essential skills for online learning. Sessions on Teams and OneNote skills, study techniques, and mind mapping were conducted to prepare them for the upcoming academic year.

A student from Salvado Catholic College highlighted the camp’s unique opportunities:

‘ViSN allows for students to experience more than their school can offer and a chance to meet new people and possible interests.’

Another highlight of the camp was the prayer service held outside at sunset. Participants had the opportunity to add their aspirations and expressions of gratitude to coloured leaves according to the diocese they had travelled from. Collectively, these leaves formed a beautiful prayer tree, which became the central focus of the outdoor prayer service. This reflective moment allowed students to contemplate the unique gifts they contribute to the ViSN community.

Creative activities such as meditation and stretching, board games, giant games, and collaborative escape room challenges ensured that learning was both enjoyable and engaging. These activities provided a balance of mental and physical stimulation, encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones.

‘I have personally really enjoyed camp and meeting all the other lovely ViSN students and teachers and learning the basics and importance of online learning. It has been really fun doing different games and meeting new people even if it has been outside of my comfort zone,’ shared a student from Holy Cross College.

The camp concluded with a reflective session where students shared their experiences and insights.

A student from St Joseph’s School summarized the camp’s impact succinctly:

‘The ViSN camp experience was really good and provided me with the skills I need to learn online next year and also gave me the opportunity to meet new people and try new things.’

Overall, the ViSN camp was a well-rounded experience that successfully combined learning, collaboration, and fun, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
