Students’ Doughnut Day plan raises funds for fire relief

16 March 2020

After seeing news coverage of the devastation the 2019/2020 bushfires caused for communities and wildlife across Australia, two students from Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Karrinyup came up with a plan to help.

Sisters, Molly and Kate, in Years 5 and 2 respectively, discussed their ideas for a free dress day and doughnut sale with their principal, with proceeds to go to grass-roots organisations supporting fire recovery, while also reaching out to their local Woolworths store for support.

The store generously donated 200 doughnuts, and the Hooray for Doughnut Day event went ahead, raising $450 dollars for Blazeaid and WA Fencing Farmers, volunteer organisations that help farmers replace fences destroyed by fires, cyclones or floods.

The girls fundraising efforts were covered by news publication The Islander, as volunteers supported in-part by their contribution worked on farms on the badly burnt on Kangaroo Island.

The West Australian newspaper also published a picture of Kate with recognition for their efforts, with Molly missing out due to a visit to hospital – when the WA volunteers on Kangaroo Island heard about this, they recorded a video thanking Molly.
