Students descend on Leederville for Speak for Faith Competition

The Catholic Education Office in Leederville played host to budding young orators from across WA for the 2025 Speak for Faith Competition.

The Competition, a joint project between the Catenian Association in Western Australia and Catholic Education WA, is part of the 2025 Performing Arts Festival programme.

Twelve students were nominated to speak with Heat 1 and Heat 2 taking place on 22 and 23 July. The final, held on 30 July, saw the three best students in the Primary and Secondary category battle it out.

“whenever I receive the eucharist I feel something special in my heart.”

– Arrabella, St Paul’s Primary School

The Primary finalists were Arabella (St Paul’s Primary School), Gia (Iona Presentation College), and Marcus (St Anthony’s School). They were asked to respond to the impromptu question ‘What are some ways that members of the Church take part in the Church community?’ and deliver pre-prepared speeches on the teachings of Jesus.

Joining online from Karratha, Arabella said ‘our faith reminds us to slow down, be kind and care for the people around us’ and went on to say, ‘whenever I receive the eucharist I feel something special in my heart’.

Marcus said ‘Jesus is our role model’ pointing to the parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of where Jesus serves a role model. He went on to say ‘we show kindness and service not only because it is the good thing to do but to live out our faith’.

Gia noted that ‘Jesus’ willingness to die on the cross shows the greatest act of love and self-sacrifice’. Referring to her own school Gia said, ‘I am an Ionian’ and, referencing the Presentation Sisters, said ‘they are the prefect examples of service and compassion’.

“we are called to recognise the inherent dignity in each of God’s children.”

– Isabella, Seton Catholic College

The Secondary finalists were Bianca (John XXIII Catholic College), Hudson (La Salle College), and Isabella (Seton Catholic College). They were asked to research and prepare speeches drawing on the Senior Secondary Religious Education Curriculum with possible topics including climate change, materialism, natural law, and voluntary assisted dying.

They also had to respond to the impromptu question ‘Historically war and violence have influenced the interaction between religion and society – Why have a violence become a matter of concern for the Church?’.

Catholic Institute of Western Australia Managing Director, Dr John Topliss, who served as one of the judges said:

“The calibre of speakers was extremely high. All students should be congratulated on preparing and delivering engaging and thoughtful speeches.”

The Primary Results were:

3rd – Marcus

The Secondary Results were:
