Start of Term Message

Dear Colleagues, students, parents, and friends,

It is wonderful to welcome you back to another term. This marks the beginning of my tenure as Executive Director of Catholic Education Western Australia. I am honoured to be leading this system which serves thousands of families from diverse backgrounds.

To my colleagues in our schools and offices, which span the entire state of WA, covering four Dioceses and over 2.5 million square kms, thank you for your continued commitment to delivering a Christ-centred and child focused contemporary education system.

The greatest advocates for the power of an innovative and contemporary education system are our 83,000 students. I am strongly committed to elevating the student voice within our system and look forward to working with CEWA’s new Student Advisory Council, which commences this term.

This Council is a first at system level for CEWA and includes 20 students selected from nominees across the state. It will inform and shape the system, working with CEWA’s Deputy Executive Director in identifying key priorities for students and opportunities for system growth, it will also advocate for student needs.

It is important that we continue to meet the needs of those students and their families in an ever-changing world, so our schools remain the school system of choice for families, even in an increasingly secular world. I am particularly excited by the opportunities for the safe use of AI and other technology to deliver a diverse, flexible, modern model of education. This will not only ensure our students are prepared for the modern workplace but ensures our own workforce can reduce workload where possible so they can focus on our core business of providing the highest quality education. I want to encourage everyone to think about how we can be bold and innovative inside and outside the classroom whilst acknowledging the diversity of experiences and backgrounds staff and students bring to our schools.

Having served communities for over 150 years, Catholic schools are and should be both places of continuity and agents of change. I am proud to be a part of a system which has made such a lasting contribution to Australian society, and I hope to continue to share with you examples of why families put their trust in us to educate their children. I believe our schools are not only places where young people learn contemporary skills and discover their passions and talents but where they are given opportunities to encounter Christ in meaningful ways and to discover their own personal faith.

Thank you once again for choosing to be a part of Catholic education in Western Australia. I hope you have a great term, and I look forward to witnessing the wonderful things happening across our schools.

Yours sincerely,

Annette Morey

Executive Director
