Star of the Sea’s young scientists triumph at WA STEM Showcase event

Eighteen young scientists from Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School in Rockingham represented Catholic Education at the Kids in Space Showcase held at the Western Australia Space Science Education Centre on 19 June.

The Year 5s presented three projects answering the brief to design something that could help astronauts work and live in space, with the prototype needing to be 3D printed. Students were then asked to share their project and the design process with attendees who dropped by their booth at the Showcase.

In a strong endorsement of the students’ scientific endeavour, one of the groups went on to win the Showcase, and will now represent WA at the National Maker’s Empire Showcase in Adelaide in November.

Abigail said:

“Our project is about clearing out space junk, to clean our orbital environment.  It is called the SJC, standing for Space Junk Collector.

“I enjoyed the whole experience of the Kids in Space Showcase and I think it’s an important part of life. My favourite part of the Showcase Day was sharing the information with the judges… and, of course, winning!”

Amelie added:

“Our project is about space junk because there is too much of it in space.

“I liked taking part in the Kids in Space showcase because I enjoyed working on the project and finding information.  STEM is important and fun because it extends your brain and uses creativity.

“My favourite part of the Showcase Day was when we won first place!’

“Our project is the SJC (Space Junk Collector).  It collects space junk and takes it back to earth.  It is about wanting to keep space clean,” said Hannah.

“It was fun taking part in the Kids in Space Showcase because I liked getting to explain our project.  I think STEM is important because kids need to be able to present and talk clearly.”

“My favourite part of the Showcase was getting to show people our work and explain it to them,” she added.

“Our project is about space junk.  We made a space junk collector that collects space junk.  It is called the SJC,” said Iylah.

“I enjoyed talking to people about our information and looking at everyone else’s projects.

“My favourite part of the Showcase Day was telling people our information and getting our showcase area ready,” Iylah added.

The students were presented their trophy by Education Minister, Hon Sabine Winton. This is the third consecutive year that a CEWA school has won this WA Showcase Event.
