St Joseph’s Waroona centre of STEM world once again

St Joseph’s School in Waroona has once again become the home of STEM with the third annual STEMathon.

Over 500 students from Pinjarra, Harvey, and Mandurah descended on Waroona for the event which is held as part of National Science Week (9-17 August).

The event, the largest single Science Week event hosted by a school outside the Perth metropolitan area, was made possible through the generosity of over 100 volunteers, presenters, and community organisations.

Students experienced a wide variety of activities including Microsoft Flight Simulator challenges supported by the Royal Aero Club of WA, robotics and VR headsets, World of Maths and CEWA Maths workshops, loose parts play by Educated by Nature, and interactive exhibits from organisations such as Alcoa of Australia, Schlam, Charles Hull, Curtin University’s BinarX space program, the Perth Observatory, and WA Police.

Khaleesi Year 2 said
“The STEMathon this year was even better than last year. My favourite part was Loose Parts Play.”

“My favourite part was ‘No pup cleft behind’. The puppies were so cute and it was awesome to learn about their work,” added Lilly, Year 5.

Alongside dazzling science experiments, puppies, drones, and space telescopes, the STEMathon also celebrated the talents of local schools, with Mandurah Catholic College and St Damien’s Dawesville showcasing student projects.

The event was a true community effort, uniting staff, parents, volunteers, and local organisations. It highlighted how Catholic schools can act as a beacon of innovation and inclusion, offering students from regional communities rich learning experiences that inspire curiosity and collaboration.

Year 6s Harrison and Luke said:
“I liked World of Maths the best. The challenges were engaging and frustrating at the same time.”

“It was my first STEMathon and I loved it. The flight simulator challenge and the various items in the hall were my favourite parts.”
