Budding Seton Catholic College cinematographers William Walker (Year 12) and Oliver Turner (Year 11) have been selected as nominees for their films Durg and Guess Who at the 2025 WA Made Film Festival.
In Durg, Zack is grappling with loneliness and addiction. He faces his inner demon personified by the sleek and sinister Durg. Guess Who is about a teenage boy clouded in anxiety learning to find himself through new experiences.
Both students, who are nominated in the same category ‘Best Student Film Award’, credit the College’s Media Program for unlocking their full potential and encouraging them to be confident in their talents.
“Seton’s Media program has been pivotal in my growth as a filmmaker. It provided me with the technical expertise needed to produce films, while also inspiring me to find and develop my unique creative style. The program challenged me to think critically about how stories are told, allowing me to work alongside others, share ideas and learn from different perspectives,” William said.
“I want people to leave my film ‘Guess Who’ feeling hopeful. This film is based off my own experiences and struggles with mental health and identity, so I want people coming away feeling that no matter what, it can always get better, like it has been for me,” Oliver said.
Media teacher Luke Sawle said the Media program has provided students with opportunities to refine their technical skills, supported by upgraded equipment and access to industry workshops.
“We originally started the program teaching photography but since 2022, it has evolved with a strong focus on film.
“With like-minded schools, the development of an ATAR Media pathway and participation in the Hyperview Film Festival have further elevated student achievement. Under the leadership of Adelaide Buchanan, Head of Learning in the Arts, the program continues to grow, offering students the tools and experiences needed to excel in media production.”
