MP helps celebrate Liwara’s Sustainability in Action

Liwara Catholic Primary School’s leadership and care for creation was on show during a visit from Member for Kingsley, Hon Jessica Stojkovski MLA.

As part of the WasteSorted Schools Grants Program, Liwara has been strengthening its whole‑school approach to waste reduction, recycling, and environmental education. These initiatives reflect the school’s dedication to caring for God’s creation, a core aspect of Catholic social teaching and a lived expression of Laudato Si’.

Oscar, Pre-Primary said:
“We need to throw rubbish in the bin because we don’t want the Earth to be stinky.”

Hannah, Year 2 added that sustainability was important because “it teaches me how to draw the birds, I like drawing nature.”

During her visit, Hon Stojkovski met with the Year Six Sustainability Leaders, a passionate group of students who guide their peers in making responsible, environmentally conscious choices. They shared the projects they have been leading across the school, demonstrating how student voice and leadership are central to Liwara’s sustainability journey.

She also toured the school grounds and viewed the newly completed nature-themed mural near the undercover area. Supported through grant funding, the mural celebrates the beauty of the natural world and serves as a vibrant reminder of the school’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

Hon Stojkovski’s s visit affirmed the importance of empowering young people to take meaningful action and highlighted the strong partnership between the school and the wider community.

Year 3 student, Claire said:
“It is good to look after our Earth, if birds eat trash there will be no more nature.”

Meanwhile, Kade in Year 6 said sustainability keeps the planet healthy and people will enjoy living better.

Ross and Willow, also Year 6 said without sustainability ‘things would go bad’ and that instead ‘we want to keep animals on our Earth alive and keep our Earth clean’.

At Liwara Catholic Primary School, sustainability is more than a program, it is a way of living out their faith, showing respect for creation, and nurturing responsible citizens for the future.
