Minecraft magicians score national recognition

Four students from St Mary’s Primary School in Kalgoorlie finished second in the 2025 AEL Minecraft Competition.

The national competition earned the Year 6 students from St Mary’s IMAGINeers program praise for creativity and cultural storytelling with judges saying the project made for an ‘engaging and memorable entry’.

Joel, Jack, Dev and Tapiwa designed a digital interpretation of an Aboriginal dreamtime story, The First Fire, representing its characters, setting and cultural importance within Minecraft.

The students developed an interactive journey

using non-player characters and a rail system to guide viewers through the tale.

Dev said:
“Our group came together extremely well to create The First Fire Minecraft world, which I think we captured well in a respectful way. It was interesting learning more about coding and enchants in Minecraft. I love being a part of St Mary’s IMAGINeers and challenging myself.”

Joel added
“It was a great experience to spend time with friends and play one of my favourite games to solve problems and be creative. Bringing the story to life and learning about the Indigenous dreaming perspective was an interesting experience.”

“Creating the dreaming world in Minecraft really made me understand the Dreamtime story and connect with it more than I normally would. I loved having a problem and trying to solve it, the competition has taught be that if you work as team, you can achieve any goal,” said Tapiwa.

Jack said
“I really enjoyed creating the world and using my gaming skills in an out of the box way at school. Trying more difficult coding techniques was exciting to bring The First Fire to life.”
