Mary’s Mount Primary School marks Laudato Si’ Week

Staff and students at Mary’s Mount Primary School in Goosebury Hill marked Laudato Si Week (17-24 May) with a range of activities to showcase their commitment to living and learning sustainably.

The week began with staff signing a ‘Laudato Si’ Pledge’, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to caring for our common home.

Students also got in on the act by spending time in the school’s nature playground, allowing them to connect with nature through unstructured, imaginative play. Before school, the Sustainability Squad engaged in repurposing recycled bottle caps into garden art, embracing creativity and, seeing the beauty and potential in materials that might otherwise be discarded.

Various year levels got involved, whether it was the creation of native bee hotels by the Kindy and Year 2 classes or Pre-Primary’s book swap or the Year 3s waste audit, and Year 4s “adopt a patch” native tree planting. Each project aimed to encourage students to actively care for the Earth and strengthen their connection to their local environment.

The school community rounded out the week by taking part in Walk Safely to School Day, promoting sustainable travel, and competing in teams to collect and sort the most litter as part of the SPOGOMI competition. The Year 4s emerged as the inaugural winners as the school managed to add to their compost and prevent some recyclables from going into landfill!
