Liwara’s colourful collaboration to brighten your commute

Eagle-eyed drivers might have spotted something new if they’re driving past Liwara Catholic Primary School in Greenwood.

The school was honoured to be invited by Main Roads WA to collaborate on an exciting community art project with mural artist Paula Hart.

This special partnership brought Paula to the school for a full week of creative sessions, where she worked closely with students to explore the power of art in bringing people and communities together.

The mural, which is themed around celebrating friendship, lunchtime connection, play and the beauty of local plants and animals, was developed through brainstorming sessions with each year group.

Once done the mural reflected the heart of Liwara and its wider community.

Each class participated in a 50-minute workshop with Paula, who guided students through a guided drawing experience. She encouraged children to draw freely and confidently, using her signature style that blends bold lines and exaggerated features to create playful, cartoon-like images.

Through this process, students contributed their unique voices to a collective artwork that celebrates both individual creativity and a sense of belonging in a vibrant, inclusive community.

“I liked the whole process. I loved that we got to choose our favourite animal and design our character to be funny,” said Luca, Year 4.

“I liked how it didn’t have to be perfect and we got to have fun drawing it,” Cooper, Year 4 added.

“I love driving past it every day and saying that I contributed to that. I hope it will be there for years to come,” said Chloe, Year 5.

“I loved exaggerating the characters’ features to make my work unique. I think it is funny how big it is on the wall,” added Vivienne, also Year 5.

“I love how my creativity was allowed to flow. It is also pretty cool to know that I have contributed to this project,” said Emmett, Year 6.

“Driving past the mural gives me a sense of pride and I know that the illustration represents all of Liwara,” said Evia, Year 6.
