Last month Mater Christi Catholic Primary School held its annual LEGO Masters competition, an event that continues to grow in popularity each year.
Over two weeks, students from Years 1 to 6 were invited to take part in this exciting creative challenge, held in the school library. Participants worked in teams of up to five and were challenged to use only the LEGO provided to create their own free-build designs.
The library was filled with excitement, laughter and creativity as students worked together, sharing ideas and transforming simple LEGO pieces into imaginative and impressive creations.
The event provided students with an opportunity to develop their teamwork, problem-solving and creative-thinking skills while, most importantly, having fun.
On 22 September, families were invited to the school for the Learning Journey, giving parents the opportunity to see the wonderful work their children had completed throughout the term. Following the Learning Journey, families were invited into the library to view the LEGO displays. Parents and students were then able to vote for their favourite creations.
Patrick in Year 4 learnt to ‘work with the bits you have and don’t get too fussy with the colours like you do at home, and have fun.’
Meanwhile Ryleigh, also Year 4, loved ‘how we can be as creative as we want and are free to do the designs like we want to.’
‘Bring on next year’s LEGO Masters,’ she added.
The school were delighted to be joined by a very special guest judge, Robbie Jones from the LEGO Store at Garden City. Robbie was given the challenging task of selecting a winner from the Year 3 displays.
With so many creative and imaginative builds to choose from, it was a difficult decision. Robbie ultimately selected Eloise, Rosanne, Alexandra and Charlie as the Year 3 winners, with their incredible baby robot that can tell the time.
More than 300 students participated in LEGO Masters this year, with more than 70 displays created and proudly showcased throughout the library.
‘I liked LEGO Masters because you can choose who you want to be with and let your imagination go crazy. It was great fun,’ said
Ayrah, Year 4.
Alyssa, Year 5, also liked the event saying ‘all my friends let me be part of the team. I really had a lot of fun doing LEGO Masters’.
Robbie also spoke about the wonderful atmosphere he experienced during the event:
‘It was the most wonderful community event. It was fantastic to see all the parents really caring about the children’s creations, and I loved seeing all the happy faces. It was an amazing night.’
LEGO Masters has become a much-loved annual event at Mater Christi, and each year it seems to get bigger, more creative and more exciting. The students are already looking forward to seeing what next year’s LEGO Masters will bring.
