La Salle’s Year 7 Rising Stars empowering students and fostering connections

A new programme at La Salle College in Middle Swan is encouraging its rising stars to share thoughts and ideas about the College, as well as planning and running events and initiatives throughout the year.

The student-led program allows the Year 7 students to foster connections, while empowering them to grow in leadership and contribute to the school community in innovative, fun, and engaging ways.

Last term the Year 7 Rising Stars ran ‘Walking Wednesdays’ to develop connection and physical activity levels for their peers. This saw participants gain a House token for each lap of the oval they completed.

The House group with the most tokens, Brigid House, shared in a morning tea to celebrate together, this was also an opportunity to strengthen connections.

Planning for Term 3 is well underway with the group advertising ‘Wow Wednesdays’ which encourages all Year 7 students to meet in the gym at lunch time to participate in mini-volleyball games, dodge ball and soccer.

The College has seen outstanding numbers at these events and hope to continue to support engagement and connection within the Year 7 cohort for the remainder of the year.

“We get to organise events for the school at lunch/recess, we get to have a lot of fun with our friends and have a great time all the time! “It gives me an opportunity to step up in a leadership role and its really fun!” said Harrison.

“My favourite activity is walking Wednesday and Wow Wednesday because we all interact with each other and become a good group,” added Rhiannon.

“I enjoy being a Rising Star because I like to help run stuff and help do things,” said Dana.

Samantha outlined what the group does noting they “organise some of the extra activities for Year 7s at La Salle. We also have weekly meetings about how we can approve and what we need to change at make the activities more fun, including, and enjoyable for any Year 7 that joins in on the activities.”

She added:

“I enjoy being a Year 7 Rising Star because I get a say in doing something that makes people happy, and I always try my hardest to make people happy. I get to connect with other people and have fun with them while also doing something for the school and other people.”
