La Salle students transform textiles into community support

La Salle College’s Year 11 and 12 students are putting their textile skills to remarkable use, repurposing old materials to support various community initiatives. Their innovative projects not only breathe new life into discarded items but also foster a spirit of giving and sustainability.

As part of their textile program, Year 11 students have creatively transformed chef jackets into aprons. This upcycling effort supports the ‘Dust Up’ sports carnival in remote Western Australian communities. The ‘Prepare, Produce, Provide’ team will deliver these aprons later this year, ensuring the festival benefits from the students’ hard work and creativity.

Year 11 student Opal shared her enthusiasm.

“It was a very engaging project that helped us to relearn sewing skills and also to help other communities.”

Year 11 student Mirabella highlighted the environmental impact, saying:

“We learned about recycling fabrics, sustainability, and the importance it has on the environment. It has inspired me to consider upcycling older materials and clothing; like we did with the chef jackets into the aprons.”

Meanwhile, Year 12 students have been busy crafting fleece blankets for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Using donated fabric, they have created warm and thoughtful gifts to support those in need during the colder months.

“This project allowed me to engage with the community in an indirect approach. I was grateful to be involved as it made me more compassionate and thoughtful towards those in need, especially with the colder months approaching,” said Year 12 student Anna.

“This was a great first project for the Year 12 class, as they were able to focus on sewing techniques while also giving back to the community. “This aligns perfectly with our Jubilee Year theme of service,” added teacher Mrs Griffiths.

These projects exemplify how La Salle students are using their education to make a positive impact, demonstrating the power of creativity and compassion in addressing the needs of their community.
