Kids helping kids: St Francis Xavier Primary School take up the challenge

Thirty-two Year 6s from St Francis Xavier Primary School in Geraldton have taken up the ‘Premier’s Telethon Challenge’.

The Challenge, which focuses on kids helping kids, has so far raised more than $8,000 with the school contributing over $2,000.

Taking on the challenge was driven by students after they visited the ‘The Kids Research Institute’ at

Perth Children’s Hospital while on camp in Week 2 of Term 2. This touching trip motivated St Francis Xavier students to take action. They found the Premier’s Telethon Challenge and with the support of their teacher, Miss Smith, they looked at the challenge in further detail and decided to take it on!

Miss Smith and the year 6 students have been integrating this year’s Telethon initiative into their curriculum by writing persuasive letters to local businesses and MPs.

They have also been developing their speaking and listening skills as they have been preparing to meet with the school’s Parents & Friends Group (P&F).

Students have encouraged the P&F to get involved and work collaboratively with each other to plan events and experiences for the school community to be involved in.

One student was excited to have ‘Kids helping Kids!’ whilst another noted that ‘small actions lead to big impact’.

They went on to say ‘we just want to help in any way we can’ and that the project was about ‘putting effort and thought into how we could help’.

Principal Justine Smith said:
“Our school community embraces our mission and identity focuses, and we have generously supported Caritas and the Bishop’s Communio Appeal this year.

“The year 6s wanted to continue this mission, and actively display our school values of compassion, respect and inclusivity in how they could help kids just like them.”

Christ the King School in Beaconsfield, Mater Christi Catholic Primary School in Yangebup and St Vincent’s School in Parmelia are also among the schools to sign up for the Challenge.
