Film Festival stars prove Seton Media Production and Analysis is gold standard

Seton Catholic College’s Media and Production course continues to churn out promising young film makers, marking it out as a top performing CEWA school in the field.

Five students have been selected for the 2026 WA Made Film Festival including Year 12s Oliver and Veronika as well as 2025 graduates Nathan, William, and Tristan. Meanwhile Class of 2022 Alumnus, Alexander, who is also William’s brother, is set to have his documentary screened at the festival, highlighting the lasting impact of the College’s Media programme.

The quality of work created by Seton’s filmmakers has led to a number of student award nominations.

Nathan received an exceptional number of nominations including:

  • Best Overall Film
  • Best Director
  • Best Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design

Nathan has also received national and international recognition for his film, including being selected for the Sydney Short Film Biennale by Cineverse. His film is nominated for Best Director at the IMDb-certified festival and it is set to be screened alongside industry short films on 21 February at Sydney’s Reservoir Cinema.

His film has also been nominated for Best Drama Film at AME International Film Festival on the Sunshine Coast. He has received a partial scholarship to ECU’s Screen Academy for 2026.

Tristan has also been recognised with nominations for:

  • Best Student Film
  • Best Director
  • Best Editing
  • Best Sound
  • Best Costume

Tristan joins Nathan in being selected for screening at Media Perspectives, an ATOMWA initiative showcasing outstanding ATAR Media productions. Screenings will take place at Burswood Outdoor Cinema on 11 March.

Oliver’s film, The Painter, has also been nominated for Best Performance (Seton’s Media Teacher Ms Apenis).

The young filmmakers have been strongly supported by the College’s Media Department including Mr Sawle, Ms Apenis, Mr Phillips and Mr Symons. The staff’s dedication, expertise and countless hours of mentoring continue to inspire students to bring powerful, creative stories to life.

“The Media Programme at Seton Catholic College has provided me opportunities to grow my skills, as well as improve both technically and creatively as a filmmaker. At First, I only knew the basics of filming and lacked confidence in my ideas. However, with the guidance of Mr Sawle and the media staff. I’ve developed my filmmaking skills and found my own creative voice as a storyteller,” said Veronika.

These student achievements are complemented by the recognition of Media Production and Analysis as a top-performing CEWA course, with Seton Catholic College the only CEWA school to have top-performing students in this subject area.

Oli said:

“My filmmaking approach has developed significantly during my second selection for this festival, largely due to the support and opportunities provided by my school’s media department. Knowing I have the backing of my teachers and tutors has given me the confidence to be more experimental and take more creative risks in my work.”

The College are so proud of students, alumni and staff involved in these achievements and looks forward to seeing their work celebrated on screen throughout 2026.

The WA Made Film Festival, which showcases emerging Western Australian filmmakers, will be held at Palace Cinemas in Perth CBD from 20 February to 1 March.
