Executive Director attends powerful talk to students at former school

CEWA’s Executive Director, Annette Morey was in attendance at Prendiville Catholic College on Wednesday 11 March for a powerful talk delivered to Year 11 students by Louise Clark, Head of MacKillop Library.

Mrs Morey, a former staff member at Prendiville, met staff and students whilst touring the school campus with current Principal, Simon Kanakis.

Louise’s talk, The Ripple Effect – Bronnie’s Story, is an emotional reflection on the tragic motorcycle accident which claimed the life of her daughter, Bronwyn.

Louise recounts how a single decision and the actions that follow, can create a devastating ripple effect that touches the lives of many.

Bronnie had just turned 22 when she chose to accept a ride on a powerful motorbike from an old school friend. Shortly after leaving Hillarys Marina, the bike, which was travelling above the speed limit, hit the kerb and the driver lost control.

In describing the ripple effect, Louise reflected on how her immediate family took the full force of the tragedy, with countless ripples extending to extended family, close friends, and the wider community. These impacts, she explained, are profound and long‑lasting.

Louise’s key message to the students was:

‘The choices we make as individuals can have an enormous effect on not only us but on our loved ones as well.’

She emphasised the importance of careful decision making:

‘A bad decision does effect the lives of your loved ones significantly, but most importantly it effects your life more!’

Two of the Year 11s who attended the talk shared their thoughts saying:

“I think it is so nice when a staff member goes out of their way to share a personal story. The story truly got to me and really made me think about those decisions we think don’t matter. We hope Ms. Clarke knows how impactful her speech was and how grateful we are that she dared to share it with us.”

“It was a very sad situation presented and held lots of value for Mrs Clarke, I learned how to make good decisions on my safety and not trust luck.”

Over 20,000 young people have listened to Louise in the past 10 years as she bravely shares her story.
