Ella’s ‘green’ mission met with open arms

Meet Ella Dale, a Year 12 student with a passion for sustainability and a vision to transform her community of Karratha. The Head Girl at St Luke’s College has taken on an ambitious project to beautify the town by growing and donating over 100 native trees to her local community.

Her initiative, Greener Karratha, launched in 2024, is part of the Future Female Leaders Program, and aims to bring a burst of greenery to the arid landscape.

“I initially established a native plant nursery at my school, inspired by the city council’s investment in planting mature trees along local roads. Since then, I’ve collaborated with the Scouts, Karratha Community House, Salvation Army, and Cheeditha Aboriginal Community.

“Today, the community are encouraged to adopt trees, including River Red Gums, Kurrajong and Golden Shower (Cassia Fistula), that they can plant in visible public spaces to gain the greatest benefits. These trees were specifically chosen for their hardy, drought-resistant components, suited to the city’s climate.

“Karratha is an incredible place to live, but it can be harsh and dry. By planting native trees, we’re creating shade, supporting wildlife, and making our town even more beautiful for future generations. This is my way of giving back.”

“Trees offer numerous benefits: they provide shade, improve air quality, and make spaces more inviting. Small actions, such as planting a tree, can have a significant impact. This project encourages students to take ownership of their environment and think long-term. Caring for the environment not only strengthens communities but also makes towns more liveable,” Ella said.

Inspired by her father, who works as a landscaper at St Luke’s, and grandmother, an avid gardener, Ella said it was important to educate the community on how a small action, like planting a tree, can make a huge impact.

“…This project encourages students to take ownership of their environment and think long-term. Caring for the environment not only strengthens communities but also makes towns more liveable.”

Greener Karratha has been met with enthusiasm from the local community. Many residents were eager to plant trees on their verges and in public spaces, with some even donating pots, time, and effort to support the project. There has been no major pushback, only widespread excitement and support for Ella’s sustainability efforts.

Ella Dale’s journey is a testament to the power of youth leadership and community support in making a tangible impact. Her dedication to creating a greener Karratha is an inspiration to all, demonstrating that even small actions can lead to significant change.

“The trees are ready to go now – I just need people who are willing to plant them and care for them.”
