Ciaran Centre upgrades its space to cater to students with special needs

St Kieran Catholic Primary School Principal, Daine Burnett and Assistant Principals, Sally Hart and Anthony Davis welcomed guests including Executive Director Wayne Bull, Hon David Michael MLA, Member for Balcatta and neighbouring principals to the blessing and opening of the refurbished Ciaran Centre.

The event held on 28 March, included a blessing of the building, administered by St Kieran parish priest Father Wilson Donnizzetti.

The Ciaran Centre is an early intervention centre for students from 3 to 12 years old. Here, children learn how to socialise, they learn communications skills and how to follow routines.

“What a successful opening at St Kieran! We are so proud of our incredible students, who continue to shine in their own unique ways. Grateful to be part of such a dynamic and nurturing team, united by our commitment to inclusion, belonging, and celebrating every learner’s strength,” Mrs Hart said.

“Our program has a supportive teaching environment approach of our students, and we use strategies such as ABA, TEACCH, Floortime, Direct Instruction, Discreet Trialling and Intensive Interaction – based on the characteristics of our students. Having this space will provide us with a multi-disciplinary approach, utilising information provided by Occupational, Speech and Physiotherapy.”

Mr. Bull took the opportunity to thank all involved in the construction of the Ciaran Centre and educators for their contributions.

“….These building works, including refurbishing and expanding the Special Education Regional Centre, re-roofing the main building, and modifying existing buildings are designed to ensure St Kieran can continue to deliver the specialist and general education that the school is well-known for.

“….St Kieran is an important school within our Catholic education system. Through the Ciaran Centre, students from here and surrounding school are provided early intervention and supported to transition back to their own school. This is an example of how Catholic schools contribute to the wider WA education landscape and fill a gap where it’s needed most.”
