Christ the King School celebrates NAIDOC Week

20 September 2018

This year’s NAIDOC theme was ‘Because of Her We Can!’ It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the vital role women have played and of course continue to play in our community, our families, our culture and our lives.

The students and staff of Christ the King Catholic School honoured all women past, present and future who have had an impact on their lives, as the celebrated NAIDOC Week 2018 and the theme ‘Because of Her We Can!’.

The week was also a time to celebrate Bardi culture and enjoy the beautiful country aroudn Djarindjin and Lombadina, and began with the traditional Community Walk and welcome ceremony, in which community members joined the school to walk around the communities with the Aboriginal, Torres Strait, Australian and Christ the King school flags.

The Bardi Jawi and Oorany Rangers, Michael Alvares (AKA Kite Man) and his wife Jan visited to work with the students throughout the week. Students inspected different kites that he had made and each student then made a pentagonal kite which they were able to decorate and fly.

On Wednesday the school celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop, and Year 6 students from Saint Mary’s College in Broome joined for the special occasion.

The week ended with the book launch of ‘Djarindjin Gorna Jawal’, and the school acknowledging the participation of students through their very own NAIDOC and Gorna Liyan Awards.

The school celebrated with community; feasting on fish curry, goolil, chicken curry, oxtail stew, roo tail, seafood marinara and damper, and watched students sing a song, read the story in Bard language and perform traditional dances.

The students of Christ the King would like to acknowledge ‘our mothers, our Elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters’ for it is Because of Her We Can!
