CEWA schools in spotlight for waste-wise initiatives: Mary’s Mount Primary

08 September 2020

CEWA schools and colleges are doing some great work in engaging students, staff and their communities in responsible stewardship of the natural environment, and a number have become accredited as Waste Wise Schools as part of the process.

The Waste Wise Schools program, an initiative of the State Government’s Waste Authority, recently featured Mary’s Mount Primary School in the filming of a new introductory online learning module for teachers, which will allow teachers to learn about the program and complete the first step of accreditation.

Mary’s Mount Primary school was chosen for filming by Waste Wise Schools for their excellent achievements and well set up systems in waste avoidance and recovery.

Footage captured at the school featured their worm farms and compost systems, waste wise gardens, classroom sorting bins, early years sustainability area, market days, school recycling hub, and the Year 5 Green Team in action.

Belinda Henderson, Sustainable Schools Coordinator at Mary’s Mount PS, said the students and school community loved being part of the filming process.

“Our whole school community have been doing our best to improve waste management systems over the four years since we gained our Waste Wise School accreditation, with some of the best ideas coming from our student Green Team,”

The online learning module featuring the Mary’s Mount Primary School footage will be available on the Waste Wise schools Website early in Term Four.
