Catholic school students shine in STEM MAD National 2024

On 19 November, a number of Catholic schools took part in the STEM Mad National 2024 held in Brisbane.

Five schools (Mercy College, St Matthew’s School, St Lawrence’s Primary School, Sacred Heart Primary School, and St John’s Primary School) presented six projects at the ‘In Person Showcase’ held at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

During this showcase, Mercy College, Koondoola was presented the People’s Choice Award for their project, CheckPoint. Sacred Heart Primary School, Highgate was awarded the STEM Ambassador Award for their project, Fire Evacuation Robot.

Seven other Catholic schools (St Lawrence Primary School, Balcatta, Our Lady of Grace School, Mary’s Mount Primary School, St John’s School, St Joseph’s College, St Mary’s School, and St Lawrence Primary School, Bluff Point) presented nine projects during the Live Online Showcase.

Mary’s Mount was presented the People’s Choice Award for their project FireWise Garden, which the school went on to implement. 

Audrey, Year 5 at Mary’s Mount said:

“It was great to be a part of a project that we designed to help the environment. We know that making a difference helps make the world a better place. We learnt so much and there were lots of challenges we had to overcome to make our project.”
