Catholic school students shine at WorldSkills National Championship

Five Year 12 students from Aranmore Catholic College, Bunbury Catholic College, CBC Fremantle, and Mater Dei College represented TeamWA at the 2025 WorldSkills National Championships held in Brisbane (12 – 14 June 2025).

The event showcases the nation’s top apprentices and trainees in the ‘open’ category and senior secondary students in the ‘VETiS’ (vocational education and training in schools) category, across many diverse industry areas.

Andrew (Bunbury Catholic College), Benjamin (CBC), Hamish (also CBC), Kiel (Aranmore Catholic College), and Ziggy (Mater Dei College) were all part of the team with Ziggy winning a silver medal for VETiS Metals and Engineering, and Hamish receiving a Certificate of Excellence for Automotive.

“Competing initially was scary but once we got started was like being in a workshop. I met some great people and did better than I knew I could,” said Ziggy.

“Though it was a lot of extra work, the experience was a lot of fun and I learnt so much. It was great to put myself out there.”

He noted it was a “great opportunity to meet others in my field, I learnt so many new practical skills and got to travel. This is going to look really good on my resume when looking for an apprenticeship.”

Kiel said:

“Competing in the world skills tournament was a fun and nerve-racking experience.  I forgot how difficult it was to work under pressure. I totally lost track of time but managed to keep my cool and catch up for a solid finish.”

Held over three days at the Skills Show Australia event, competitors compete against their industry peers from all across Australia, to showcase and benchmark their skills on the national stage, in front of more than 200,000 people.
