Angelico Exhibition’s virtual launch

03 September 2020

The Angelico Exhibition, an important centrepiece of the Catholic Arts program of events each year, has launched online today, with the COVID-prompted virtual format creating opportunities to reach new audiences with student work.

In 2020 the Angelico Exhibition received over 300 visual arts entries from students across Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) schools, with awards presented last week at the Catholic Education Centre in Leederville for categories in primary and secondary age groups.

While the awards were not presented at the opening night event as in previous years, and works were not on display in a public venue, a physical exhibition was installed to allow for the virtual, interactive walk-through exhibition to be created.

The virtual exhibition will allow the traditional audiences of students, family and friends and the general public in Perth to view the work safely in light of COVID-19 precautions, and it also increases accessibility and opens up the exhibition to audiences who would never have been able to visit physically at a gallery space.

Primary and Secondary award winners at the 2020 Angelico Exhitibion awards presentation at the Catholic Education Centre in Leederville.

The Angelico Exhibition launched online today at catholicarts.wa.edu.au. It can be viewed on most devices, as well as with virtual reality headsets for a more immersive experience. A voting function is built into the virtual exhibition, allowing visitors anywhere to have their say in the Peoples’ Choice Award category.

Catholic Arts Chair, Darryl Winsor, said that Catholic Arts staff and working committees had risen above the challenges of 2020 to find new ways for students to engage with the Arts.

“The Virtual tour of the Angelico Art Exhibition is the first of its kind for us, and we hope it will become a fixture to accompany the physical exhibition into the future,” Mr Winsor said.

The Peoples’ Choice Award, in Primary and Secondary categories, will be decided on votes, which are open for two weeks from today (closing 17 September).
