Tough Competition at Annual Speak up Awards

18 October 2017

Congratulations to Joshua Williams, Year 6 student at Holy Spirit School, for making it through to the Grand Final of the 2017 annual Speak Up Award in September.

This year brought together a particularly strong group of competitors, with students from 12 schools across the Perth Metropolitan and Peel Region presenting outstanding speeches at the Grand Final on Wednesday 20 September at the Lawley Community Centre. Joshua’s speech on “Great Aussie Slang” earned him a special mention for his well-researched topic and impressive speaking skills.

The annual competition provides students from Yea 4 – 6 with the opportunity to research, structure and deliver speeches that not only requires a depth of knowledge on their chosen topic, but also their ability to present and deliver the content using well-honed speaking skills.

The results of the final were:

  • Grand Master’s Choice: Aeva Veitch, Year 4, Wesley College on Plastic bag pollution.
  • Runner-up Most outstanding speaker: Caidence Griffith, Year 6, St Anthony’s on the plight of refugees.
  • Best researched speech: Shreeya Naroth, Year 6, Hollywood on “What would happen if humans disappeared?”
  • Special mentions to: Joshua Williams, Year 6, Holy Spirit School on Great Aussie Slang and Bree Lewandowski, Year 6, Ranford on Plastic bag pollution.
  • Most outstanding speaker: Bree Lewandowski, Year 6, Ranford on Plastic bag pollution

Run by the Grand Lodge of WA Freemasons, students of Holy Spirit School have participated in the Annual Speak Up Awards for more than 10 years and look forward to putting their speaking skills into action again next year.
