NAIDOC Week 2018 – Xavier Catholic School

09 July 2018

With NAIDOC Week falling in the WA school holidays, many CEWA schools, like Xavier Catholic School in Hilbert, celebrated the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the final week of Term Two.

Students and staff from the school started the last day of term with Mass at St Francis Xavier Parish, leading into NAIDOC Week activities throughout the day.

The Madjitil Moorna Choir visited, hosting workshops for students from Pre-Primary to Year Six and teaching them how to sing Wanjoo (The Welcome Song).

Many of the school’s families were involved in organising a range of cultural activities in the afternoon, with students trying their hand at dot painting, making wool braids using the colours of the Aboriginal flag, making jewellery, eating Kangaroo Stew with freshly baked Damper, as well playing the didgeridoo (for male students only) and tapping sticks.

At the end of the day the whole school was attended an assembly showcasing the cultural activities that the Aboriginal Teacher Assistants share with Xavier’s Indigenous students. These students wrapped up the day’s celebrations by gifting the school with an original artwork they had created.
