Corpus Christi to make waves with new pool

Work is under way on a new aquatic centre for Corpus Christi College, a multi-purpose indoor facility that will feature an eight-lane, heated 25-metre pool.

The pool will include a lap pool and tiered seating for 180 people.

The much-anticipated project began after the official turning-of-the-soil ceremony on 31 October attended by College alumni and board members.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with the annual Burgundy, White and Blue sports dinner.

The aquatic centre is part of the College’s capital development plan, with Acting Principal Frank Italiano explaining that building a pool had been earmarked since the 1990s.

With 1300 students across Years 7-12, the co-educational college boasts a long and colourful sporting culture and history.

After years of using pools at local leisure centres, it is hoped the new facility will be pivotal in developing the aquatic skills of all students and enable more vigorous training for the swimming and water polo squads.

“‘I want to acknowledge not just the current board, but all the people who’ve come before,” Mr Italiano said.

“‘This project has been something that Principal Caroline Payne has been championing for a long time, not only at board level but with staff and at the community level.

“On her behalf, it is a wonderful occasion that we’ve got to this point.”

College Board Chair Darren Cutri acknowledged the support of the entire college community – all the families that had been part of the process and those involved in the planning.

On the importance of Physical Education and the students’ high interest in sports, Mr Cutri said:

“It is really important to have great facilities for our students going into the future.

“I look forward to [Corpus Christi College students] winning trophies in water polo and swimming.”
