CEWA uses wearable technology to monitor health and wellbeing of school principals

16 March 2017

Catholic Education Western Australia is working with Professor Donna Cross of the Telethon Kids Institute on a research project into the health and wellness of principals, thought to be the first of its kind across the world.

It has been designed in collaboration with the Catholic Primary Principals’ Association, and will involve principals using wearable technology, in the form of an Apple Watch. Half of the participants will be randomly selected by Telethon Kids Institute to receive an Apple Watch, which will then monitor biometric data, and prompt participants to answer ‘in the moment’ questions for the duration of the research.

The app is currently under development and initial research will:

  • Identify the characteristics and wellbeing mindsets of Catholic primary principals in WA; and
  • Allow us to develop an understanding of how these factors relate to principals’ health, school size and school socio-economic status.

This analysis of this research has the potential to bring significant benefit to principals, students and the wider school community.

Data confidentiality is important throughout this project, and CEWA will not have access to any of the raw research data.

The research period will run from the beginning of Term Three 2017 to the end of Term Four 2017. All participants will be required to complete two surveys, one in Term Three and one in Term Four.
